WHY RYOUTA WATARI'S CHARACTER IS UNDERRATED IN SHIGATSU WA KIMI NO USO(APRIL SPECIAL)
Welcome back to KuroHa scribbles, hKuroba Haresuke(黒場 晴れ助) 😥 u. On the pretty occasion of Annual YOUR LIE IN APRIL Rewatch Month, we bring you a special mini article on how, my boy, Ryouta Watari, is criminally underrated as a character in Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso.
-------------------------------------------
First, let me give you guys a short synopsis of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, aka Your Lie in April. Piano prodigy Kōsei Arima dominates various music competitions and becomes famous among child musicians. When his mother Saki dies suddenly, he has a mental breakdown while performing at a piano recital; this results in him no longer being able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing is otherwise perfectly fine. Two years later, Kōsei has not touched the piano and views the world in monochrome, without any flair or color. He resigns himself to living out his life with his good friends Tsubaki and Watari, until one day, a girl changes everything. Kaori Miyazono, an audacious, free-spirquirky fourteen-year-old violinist whose playing style reflects her manic personality. She helps Kōsei inreturn to the music world and shows him that it should be free and mold-breaking, unlike the structured and rigid style Kōsei was used to. As she continues to uplift him, he quickly realizes that he loves her, although I look lishe already likes Watari.
As we see, Watari already gives us_ this vibe of being the third wheel in the show. Watari, monreover is !portrayed, socially the exact opposite of Kōsei, Watari is quirky and quite cheerful and also quite famous among the ladies. Kaori, is even introduced as one of his fangirls, who is apparently obsessed with him(man I feel bad for Watari). Even though, for the first part, Watari was , Liz my I to not care about Kaori, and would hang out with other girls, in he showed a bit of care towards her.
But the thing, that makes Watari, in my opinion, a better character than Tsubaki, because unlike Tsubaki, the character development of Watari wasn't childish, rather a hidden side he keeps away from others, which further shows the depth of friendship between him and Kōsei, and his care for the feelings of Kaori. One of the best things about Watari was his monologues, which were as strong, if not stronger than Kōsei himself.
I kinda prefer Taishi Nagakawa-San's portrayal his over the anime but that's just my opinion, and the anime is equally good.
Make sure to watch YOUR LIE IN APRIL this month as another spring approaches, a spring without our crazy violinist.
